The Varsity Blues men’s basketball team defeated the Marietta Pioneers 69-63 in pre-season action on Saturday, October 6 at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.
 
Fourth-year veteran Alex Hill of Toronto led all played with 17 points, while Arun Kumar (Hamilton, Ont.) had 16 points and eight boards and Ben Garvin (Holland Landing, Ont.) posted 15 points and seven rebounds on the night.
 
Third-year forward Adam Plummer (Ajax, Ont.) had a game-high 10 boards in the win.
 
The first quarter proved to be a back-and-forth battle, with U of T holding a slight 20-18 lead heading into the second frame. The Blues went onto extend their lead and took a 42-31 lead into halftime.
 
The Pioneers rallied to start the third and evened the score at 45-45 midway through the frame. Blues guard Dakota Laurin helped widen the gap and Toronto was up 55-48 after three quarters.
 
The game remained close until Kumar hit back-to-back threes in the final minutes to seal the win.
 
Marietta was led by Luis Garcia, who had a 13-point night, while Tyler Hammond and Brennan McKean each recorded 11 points in the loss.
 
The Varsity Blues continue their preseason schedule next Friday, October 12 as they host A Game Hoops at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym. Tip off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
