Day 3: Ottawa 88, Toronto 57 - Box Score
The Varsity Blues men’s basketball team fell 88-57 to the host Ottawa Gee-Gees on Day 3 of the Jack Donahue tournament (Oct. 26-29).
Ottawa proved too much for the Blues to handle, building a 48-23 lead at halftime. A 27-point third quarter for the Gee-Gees would put the game away.
Veteran Alex Hill led the Blues for the third consecutive day, going 6-of-10 from three-point land to tally a game-high 24 points. Rookie Nick Irvine had nine points and five boards in the loss.
Four Gee-Gees hit double digits. Johnny Berhanemeskel led the team with 21 points, while Mike L’Africain had 17 and both Warren Ward and Caleb Agada notched 15 in the win.
Day 2: Bishop's 81, Toronto 76 - Box Score
For the second consecutive night, fourth-year veteran Alex Hill tallied a game-high 30 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Varsity Blues dropped an 81-76 decision to the Bishop’s Gaiters on Day 2 of the Ottawa Gee-Gees Jack Donahue Tournament.
Hill (Toronto) was 5-of-10 from beyond the arc, and went a near-perfect 11-for-2 from the free throw line. Ben Garvin (Holland Landing, Ont.) added 21 points, while Arun Kumar had 13 in the loss.
Trailing 37-34 at halftime, the Blues battled to bring the game within one (54-53) heading into the final frame. Bishop’s pulled away with four free throws from Tim Hunter in the last 14 seconds.
The Gaiters were led by Jeremy Leonard-Smith’s 17-point performance.
The Blues end the Jack Donahue tournament with a game versus the host Ottawa Gee-Gees tomorrow at 12 p.m.
Day 1: Toronto 79, UQAM 72 - Box Score
The Varsity Blues men’s basketball team defeated the UQAM Citadins 79-72 on Day 1 of the Jack Donahue Tournament, hosted by the Ottawa Gee-Gees.
Trailing 42-35 at halftime, the Blues cut their deficit to three (57-54) heading into the fourth quarter. Toronto outscored UQAM 25-15, thanks in large-part to Alex Hill’s 19-point second half, to secure the win.
Hill (Toronto) led all players with 30 points, going 13-for-13 from the free throw line, and added three steals on the night. Fellow veteran guard Arun Kumar (Hamilton, Ont.) posted 25 points, nailing seven three-pointers, in the win.
The Citadins were led by Gregory St-Amand, who tallied 17 points and 10 boards, while Alexandre Bernard had 13 points and a game-high 13 rebounds in the loss.
The Varsity Blues take on the Bishop’s Gaiters tomorrow at 6 p.m.
