The CIS defending champion Varsity Blues field hockey team went 3-0-1 at the 2011 York Invitational, Sept. 9-10, at Downsview Park.
The Blues opened the weekend with a 4-1 victory over the Waterloo Warriors. Second-year standout Alex Thicke of North Vancouver, B.C., scored two goals, while Gabby Permell (Burlington, Ont.) and rookie Amanda Woodcroft (Waterloo, Ont.) added single tallies in the win.
U of T went on to tie the OUA defending champion Guelph Gryphons 1-1 on Friday afternoon, thanks to another goal by Thicke.
Toronto blanked the Queen’s Gaels, 7-0, early on Saturday morning, before squeaking out a 1-0 victory over the Saint Mary’s Huskies to end the tournament undefeated. Third-year midfielder Justine Branco of Mississauga, Ont., and Woodcroft scored two goals apiece versus Queen’s, with Colleen Garrity, Kaelan Watson and Hannah Tighe adding one each in the victory. Branco also added the single goal versus Saint Mary’s.
The Varsity Blues open their 2011 regular season this Friday, September 16 when they travel to Montreal for three games versus the Queen’s Gaels, York Lions and Waterloo Warriors.
