BLUES BATTLE THROUGH GAELS

Box Score Nicki Schutz recorded 20 points and 12 rebounds to lead the No. 6 Varsity Blues women’s basketball team to a 68-46 victory over the Queen’s Gaels on Friday night (Feb. 4) in Kingston, Ont.

With the win, the Blues improve to 14-4 and remain in sole possession of second place, four points behind the Carleton Ravens. The Gaels drop to 3-15 and sit in seventh in the OUA East.

Schutz (Toronto) went 6-for-8 from the free throw line en route to her eighth double-double of the season. Brampton, Ont., native Sherri Pierce tallied nine points, going 2-of-3 from beyond the arc, while fellow veteran guard Joanna Medri of Toronto had eight points and a game-high four steals in Toronto’s seventh consecutive victory.

U of T got out to an early lead and went on a 13-point run to outscore the hometown Gaels 17-6 in the first quarter. Queen’s battled back throughout the second to keep the game within reach by halftime (33-24); however, the Blues went on to dominate, led by an 11-point third quarter by Schutz, to come away with the lopsided victory.

The Gaels were led by an 11-point performance by Guelph, Ont., native Gemma Bullard, while Liz Boag of Kingston chipped in with 10 on the night. Jill Wheat also recorded nine points and 10 boards in the loss.

The Varsity Blues return to the court tomorrow afternoon as they finish their road trip in Kingston versus the RMC Paladins. Tip off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
