The Varsity Blues women’s volleyball team shut out the visiting Waterloo Warriors 3-0 (26-24, 25-15, 25-21) on Saturday night (Nov. 5) at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.
With the win, the Blues improve to a perfect 4-0 and remain tied with the York Lions atop the OUA standings.
First-year leftside hitter Denise Wooding of North Vancouver, B.C., led all players with 11 kills and was named the Varsity Blues player of the game for her efforts. Sophomore Charlotte Sider added seven kills and 11 digs, while both Alexandra Hudson and Malena Rapaport added 11 digs and three serving aces on the night. Rapaport also tallied a game-high 29 assists in the win.
The Blues got off to a slow start in the first set but a late surge tied the game at 23-23. Toronto and Waterloo traded points from there and with a kill by Sider and a Waterloo miscue into the net, the Blues took it 26-24.
Toronto carried that momentum over to the second and built a 16-11 advantage midway through. The home team then went on a dominant 9-4 run to take a 2-0 lead.
U of T got out to another lopsided 6-0 start in the third set; however, the Warriors rallied to even the score at 11-11. The two teams went back and forth until Toronto took control to cap off the three-set win.
Waterloo was led by Laura Klein’s 10 kills and 12 digs in the loss.
The Varsity Blues return to the court tomorrow afternoon as they travel to St. Catharines, Ont., to take on the Brock Badgers. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
