Box Score Second-year guard Jill Stratton led all players with 22 points in leading the No. 10 Varsity Blues women’s basketball team to a 75-66 victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday night (Nov. 12) at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.
The two teams last met in the 2011 CIS consolation final, where Laurier walked away with a 64-57 win. A few weeks prior to that, the Blues had defeated the Hawks 62-54 to claim OUA bronze.
With the win, the Blues improve to 2-0 after opening weekend, while the Hawks drop to 1-1.
Stratton was 10-for-17 from the floor including 2-for-3 from beyond the arc and added four steals to earn player of the game honours.
Fifth-year guard Sherri Pierce of Brampton, Ont., recorded 16 points, five assists and four steals, while third-year transfer Kristy Chute (Amherstburg, Ont.) added 10 points in the win.
The Blues got off to a slow start, but quickly recovered with an 11-2 run and ended the first quarter with a 25-12 advantage. Both teams exchanged baskets throughout the second with U of T maintaining an 11-point lead (43-32) at halftime.
Toronto added to their lead slightly in the third, outscoring Laurier 17-13. Down by 15, second-year guard and Hawks player of the game Doreen Bonsu (Oakville, Ont.) attempted to rally the visiting squad and brought the game within nine with three minutes remaining.
Bonsu led the Hawks with double-double of 20 points and 12 boards, while Felicia Mazerolle added 14 points in the losing cause.
The Varsity Blues return to the court next Friday, November 18 as they travel to Thunder Bay, Ont., to take on the Lakehead Thunderwolves. Tip off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
