Box Score The No. 10 Varsity Blues women’s basketball team opened their 2011-12 campaign with a lopsided 84-40 victory over the Waterloo Warriors on Friday night (Nov. 11) at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.
Fifth-year guard Joanna Medri led all players with 15 points on the night. The Toronto native opened both the first and second half with a three-pointer and added five steals en route to player of the game honours.
Third-year forward Alicia Van Kampen of Orangeville, Ont., had a double-double of 13 points and 11 boards, while sophomore forward Julie Longauer (Whitby, Ont.) also recorded 13 points in the win.
The Blues opened the game on a 12-2 run and went onto build a commanding 28-9 lead after the first 10 minutes of action.
Toronto continued to dominate with an 8-0 streak in the first two minutes of the second quarter. Waterloo slightly closed the gap as rookie guard Erin Roberts (Kitchener, Ont.) led the charge with five late points. U of T held a 45-27 advantage at halftime.
The Blue and White held the visiting Warriors to single digits in each of the third and fourth quarters to round out their first win of the season.
The Varsity Blues return to action tomorrow night when they host the Laurier Golden Hawks at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym. The game is set for 6 p.m. and will be streamed live on SSN Canada via varsityblues.ca.
Game Notes: In honour of Remembrance Day, the Varsity Blues deemed Friday ‘Heroes Night’ in honour of Canadian veterans across the country. A 30-piece cadet band was on hand for the national anthem.
