The No. 4 Varsity Blues men’s soccer team notched their first win of the season with a 2-0 victory over the Laurentian Voyageurs on Sunday, September 5 in Sudbury, Ont.
Both teams battled throughout a very physical first half, however the game remained scoreless until the second.
Third-year midfielder Dylan Bams of Fanny Bay, B.C. finally opened the scoring when he received a Frederico Vaccaro throw-in and volleyed the ball past Voyageurs goalkeeper Matt George in the 58th minute.
Co-captain Yannis Gianniotis added some insurance when he scored his second goal in as many games on a penalty shot in the 71st minute. Blues goalkeeper John Smits made three saves and earned his first shut out of the season.
U of T returns to action next Saturday, September 11 when they host the Queen’s Gaels in their 2010 home opener at Varsity Centre at 3:15 p.m.
