CROSS-TOWN BATTLE ENDS IN 1-1 DRAW

The No. 2 University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s soccer team tied the Ryerson Rams 1-1 on Sunday, September 19 at Varsity Centre.

With the draw, the Varsity Blues remain in first place in the OUA East with an undefeated 4-0-2 record, while the Rams (2-0-3) are tied for second with the Carleton Ravens (3-0-0).

In what proved to be a physical affair, both teams fought for positioning and created many sound scoring opportunities.

One minute after U of T defender Mike Braithwaite (Toronto) was ejected from the game, fourth-year Ryerson midfielder Jason Morgan of Brampton, Ont., evened the score when he put one past Blues goalkeeper John Smits (Mississauga, Ont.) in the 74th minute.

Third-year midfielder Geoffrey Borgmann of Mississauga accounted for U of T’s lone goal in the ninth minute when he sent a booming shot from just inside the 18-yard box into the lower right corner of the net.

Smits made seven saves for U of T, while Ryerson goalkeeper Christian Maraldo had five.

The Varsity Blues return to the field next Saturday, September 25 when they host the Carleton Ravens at Varsity Centre. Game time is scheduled for 3:15 p.m.
