CORRIGAN TAMES LIONS, BLUES DOMINATE HOME OPENER

LeeAnne Corrigan tallied 17 points as the Varsity Blues women’s rugby team defeated the York Lions 32-12 in their 2010 home opener on Saturday, September 11 at Back Campus.

A two-time OUA all-star and 2003 CIS all-Canadian, Corrigan returns to the Blues in 2010 as a Master’s of teaching student.

After York’s Sarah Galati scored the first try of the game, Louise Chen of Ottawa got the Blues on the board, breaking through a sea of red jerseys to battle her way into the end zone for the score.

Corrigan of Phelpston, Ont. earned Toronto’s second and fourth tries of the game and successfully converted both after long dominant runs down the stretch of the field. She also added a penalty goal to her extensive point tally.

Zoriana Workun (Mississauga) edged her way over the line for the Blues third try of the game, while Toronto native Nicole Baker jumped on a loose ball in the end zone to finish off Toronto’s scoring.

Mel Cunningham attempted to rally the Lions with a try of her own, but it was too little, too late as the Blues walked away with the 20-point victory.

The Varsity Blues return to action next Saturday, September 18 when they travel to Hamilton, Ont., to take on the McMaster Marauders. Game time is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
