Members of the Varsity Blues track and field team competed at the 2010 Ontario Summer Games and the Athletics Ontario junior senior championships hosted by Laurentian University this past week in Sudbury, Ont.
Fourth-year sprinter Athena McBean of Mississauga, Ont., led the way at the Ontario Summer Games with a silver medal in the 400m (56.54) and bronze medal in the 200m (25.00). Similarly, middle distance runner Andrew Cruickshank of Toronto placed second in 800m with a time of 1:55.12, while Michael Trnkus was fourth in the men’s 400m (48.30).
At the Athletics Ontario junior senior championships, Trnkus and Jason Wurster (Stevensville, Ont.) were golden in the junior men’s 400m and senior men’s pole vault, respectively. High jumper Sarah Boyle of Scarborough, Ont. tied for the silver medal, clearing a height of 1.75m, while incoming recruit and Toronto native Rachel Jewett was third in both the junior women’s high jump (1.55m) and 400m hurdles (1:05.84), as well as fifth in the 100m hurdles (16.18).
Varsity Blues alumni Kate Reudiger earned a silver medal in the senior women’s 400m in a time of 55.14 seconds, while Alicia Brown (Ottawa) won the bronze medal (56.09) and McBean finished fourth in 56.56. Ruediger also won a bronze medal in the senior women’s 200m (25.12), while Brown was fourth (25.27).
