University of Toronto Varsity Blues hurdler Sarah Wells and pole vaulter Jason Wurster topped the podium on the final day of the Canadian track and field championships at Varsity Centre.
Wells crossed the finish line one-tenth of a second ahead of Yvonne Mensah to claim the gold medal in the women’s 400m hurdles. The Unionville, Ont., native set a new Varsity Stadium standard for the second time in as many days with 56.98. Mensah was second (57.07), while Anastasia Pearse of B.C. Athletics was third with 1:00.13.
Wurster of Stevensville, Ont., dominated the field in the men’s pole vault competition, establishing a winning height of 5.30m. Riversdale Athletic’s Taylor Petrucha was second (5.15m) and fellow Varsity Blue Doug Creighton earned the bronze medal, clearing 5.00m.
