The Varsity Blues men’s basketball team went 1-1 at the Can-Am Classic, December 21-22, hosted by Daemen College at Lumsden Gymnasium in Amherst, N.Y.
The Blues opened the tournament with a dominant 69-53 victory over the Houghton Highlanders on Tuesday night before dropping a 75-55 decision to the host Daemen Wildcats on Wednesday.
Toronto built a six-point lead at halftime versus the Highlanders and did not look back, outscoring Houghton 42-32 in the second half to secure the win. Fourth-year forward Drazen Glisic of Sarajevo, BIH led the Blues with double-double of 18 points and 11 boards, while Burnaby, B.C., native Andrew Wasik had 14 points and nine boards on the night.
Ben Garvin of Holland Landing, Ont., as well as Toronto natives Alex Hill and Justin Holmes all chipped in with eight points in the victory.
Down by three points (34-37) to the Wildcats on Wednesday night, the home team put up a superior second-half effort, shooting 44% from the floor, compared to Toronto’s 24%.
Wasik recorded a double-double of 10 points and 12 boards to lead the Blues and went on to be named a tournament all-star. Sophomore guard Arun Kumar of Hamilton, Ont., scored a team-high 14 points in the loss.
The Varsity Blues return to action on Tuesday, December 28 when they travel across town for the Ryerson national invitational tournament, where they kick things off versus the Mohawk College Mountaineers at 1 p.m.
