BLUES COME BACK TO UPSET NO. 1 LANCERS

Box Score The No. 9 Varsity Blues women’s basketball team kept their winning streak alive with a huge 66-61 victory over the No. 1 Windsor Lancers on Friday, November 12 at St. Denis Centre.

With the win, the Blues improve to a perfect 4-0 and sit atop the OUA East, while the Lancers drop to 2-1 and are tied for third in the West.

Down by as many as 12 points in the second half, rookie Jill Stratton led the Blues with nine fourth-quarter points as Toronto went on to outscore the Lancers 20-9 in the final quarter and complete the comeback win.

Five different Blues reached double digits on the night. Fifth-year forward Nicki Schutz of Toronto led the Blues with 15 points and nine boards, while Alicia Van Kampen (Orangeville, Ont.) and Stratton of Etobicoke had 12 each. Veteran guards Erin McNeely of Kingston, Ont., and Brampton, Ont., native Sherri Pierce recorded 10 points apiece in the win.

Both teams came out with intensity in what was a very evenly-matched opening quarter. The two teams traded the lead throughout with Toronto holding the 16-15 edge after one.

Windsor began to work the ball inside to forward Jessica Clemencon in the second quarter, who converted on a number of post moves in the paint as the Lancers built a seven point lead, 34-27, at halftime.

The home team would extend their lead to double digits as Clemencon continued to make shots inside throughout the third. However, the Varsity Blues hung tough thanks to some strong post play of their own from Schutz. Toronto was able to cut the Lancers lead to six heading into the fourth quarter.

Bojana Kovacevic and Clemencon led the Lancers with 18 points apiece in the loss.

The Varsity Blues return to action tomorrow night when they travel to London, Ont., to take on the Western Mustangs. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
