SAUKS SISTERS LEAD BLUES AT OUA CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Varsity Blues women’s rowing team earned four medals and finished fourth overall at the 2010 OUA championships hosted by the Brock Badgers this weekend (Oct. 29-31) in St. Catharines, Ont.

The Blues women finished with a combined team score of 42 points. The Queen’s Gaels took the title (103), followed closely by the Western Mustangs (100) and host Brock Badgers (57).

Jen and Kate Sauks of Owen Sound, Ont., led the way, earning the gold medal in the lightweight women’s double. The duo finished with a time of 7:53.7, almost five seconds ahead of the second-place Badgers.

The Sauks sisters went on to lead the heavyweight women’s eight to a bronze medal later in the day. They, along with Alana Komisar, Justyna Surzyn, Jessica Darling, Claire Hutchison, Lindsay Tetreault, Elise Mackie and cox Ken McNeilly, crossed the finish line in a time of 7:04.8 to edge the Brock Badgers by less than a second for the third-place finish.

Other double medalists include Komisar (Calgary), who earned the silver medal in the lightweight women single with a time of 8:04.1. Also, Hutchison of Hamilton, Ont., and Mackie (Calgary) paired up to earn Toronto’s second silver medal of the championships, this time in the heavyweight women’s double in a time of 7:31.1

U of T’s men’s team placed 11th in the team standings, earning a sixth-place finish in the heavyweight men’s four.
