Six different players scored as the No. 7 Varsity Blues men’s soccer team defeated the Nipissing Lakers 6-0 on Saturday, October 9 at Varsity Centre.
With the win, the Blues improve to 6-1-3 and sit in first place in the OUA East standings.
The Blues dominated the entire game, outshooting the Lakers 9-1 in the victory.
Kingston, Jamaica native Nordo Gooden opened the scoring in the 40th minute when he buried a loose ball in the 6-yard box off a Darragh McGee corner kick.
Less than two minutes later, first-year midfielder Ezequiel Lubocki (Winnipeg) sent a booming shot that bounced off Nipissing goalkeeper Andrew Richard and into the net. Toronto held a 2-0 lead at the half.
Both teams exchanged scoring opportunities in the opening minutes of the second frame; however, it was veteran striker Alex Raphael (Mississauga, Ont.) who caught Richard out of his net to record Toronto’s third goal of the game.
Rookie defender Jesse Assing of Bethany, Ont., then potted his first career goal when he sent a rocket from 20 yards out into the back of the net. McGee of Donegal, Ireland followed that up in the 74th minute when he also caught Richard out of position and placed the ball over the play to land in the bottom of the net.
Lawrence Buchan of Port Moody, B.C. would tally U of T’s final goal, receiving a great cross from McGee to have a clear path to the back of the net.
The Varsity Blues return to action this Wednesday, October 13 in a cross-town battle with the Ryerson Rams at Lamport Stadium. Game time is scheduled for 8:45 p.m.
