BLUES DOWN WATERLOO, ADVANCE TO OUA FINAL

Kaelan Watson scored the eventual game-winner as the Varsity Blues field hockey team defeated the Waterloo Warriors 2-0 in OUA semi-final action on Saturday, October 30 at Downsview Park.

With the win, the Blues advance to the OUA final tomorrow at noon, where they will meet the defending champion Guelph Gryphons. The Gryphons came away with a 6-4 win over Western in the first semifinal of the day.

A native of Richmond, B.C., and 2010 OUA first team all-star, Watson scored midway through the first half on a corner to give the Blues a 1-0 lead. Fifth-year forward Yvonne Langen of Cambridge, Ont., added some insurance towards the end of the match to secure the victory and a berth to the CIS championship next week (Nov. 5-8) in Guelph.

Goalie Katherine Williams earned the shut out victory, turning aside any shots that came her way.

"Our veterans led us in the win today," said Varsity Blues head coach John DeSouza. "I think we will need to be more aggressive around the ball and be very steady on defence. The two best teams in the OUA this year are in the final and it should be a great game."
