BLUES CLINCH FIRST, ADVANCE TO QUARTER-FINALS

The No. 6 Varsity Blues men’s soccer team shut out the Trent Excalibur 4-0 in their final game of the regular season on Saturday, October 23 to clinch first place in the OUA East division and a berth in the quarter-finals.

The Blues (10-1-3) opened the scoring in the 30th minute when fifth-year striker Nordo Gooden of Kingston, Jamaica jumped on rebound and kicked the ball past Trent goalkeeper Michael Theriault (Whitby, Ont.) and into the net.

Fellow veteran striker Alex Raphael of East York, Ont., put the Blues up by two seven minutes later when he sent a booming shot through traffic in front of the net and under Theriault.

Toronto led 2-0 at the half.

Fanny Bay, B.C., native Dylan Bams potted his third goal of the season in the 59th minute and defender Darragh McGee of Donegal, Ireland rounded out the scoring in the 78th minute to end the game at 4-0.

The Varsity Blues await the results of Wednesday’s playoff round and will face the lowest remaining seed next Saturday, October 30 at Varsity Centre.
