WOMEN'S BASKETBALL SUNK BY VOYAGEURS

In what could be considered an off night for both teams, Varsity Blues women’s basketball came out on the wrong end of a 52-49 contest against the host Laurentian Voyageurs on Friday, Jan. 22.

The sixth-place Blues women’s team is now 6-9, while Laurentian jumps to 8-6 on the season and remains in a three-way tie with Queen’s and Ryerson for third place in the OUA East division.

After two big games last weekend, in which head coach Michèle Bélanger recorded her 700th career victory, Toronto came out flat and couldn't find a way to get things going at any point throughout the night.

As a team, they shot 30 percent (20-66) from the floor and only 43 percent (7-16) from the free-throw line.

Laurentian didn’t fair any better. The Voyageurs were 12-for-64 (20%) from the field and hit 20-of-35 or 57% of their shots from the charity strip.

Fourth-year forward Nicki Schutz (Toronto) led all players with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Kingston, Ont. native Erin McNeely added 10 points, seven boards and three assists.

Guard Norma Jean Roberts of Burnaby, B.C. was the high scorer for Laurentian with 15 points and added five rebounds. Katie Goggins (Hamner, Ont.) also hit double figures with 11 points, four boards, and six assists.

U of T is back in action tomorrow night when they take on the York University Lions at the Tait McKenzie Centre. Tip off is set for 6 p.m.
