Fourth-year veterans Mario Nallira and Alex Raphael scored two goals apiece as the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s soccer team defeated the Trent Excalibur 6-0 on Saturday, September 5 at Varsity Centre.
Toronto bolted out of the gates and to an early lead in their first regular season match of 2009, with three goals in the first 15 minutes of action.
Nallira (Toronto) got the Blues on the board in the 10th minute when he sent a booming shot past Excalibur goalkeeper Josip Bosnjak (Pickering, Ont.). Blues team captain Yannis Gianniotis (Toronto) scored on a penalty kick two minutes later and Raphael (Toronto) tallied his first of the game on a wide angle shot in the 14th minute.
Raphael and Nallira scored their second goals in the 33rd and 40th minute, respectively, to give the Blues a comfortable 5-0 lead at the half.
The Blues continued to dominate throughout the second half. Seung Bok Lee (Seoul, Korea) notched his first goal of the season in the 81st minute when he went through a defender and sent the ball into the top right corner of the net.
Toronto goalkeeper John Smits (Mississauga, Ont.) made three saves, recording his first shutout of the season.
The Varsity Blues return to action tomorrow (Sept. 6) when they host the Queen’s Gaels at Varsity Centre. Game time is scheduled for 3:15 p.m.
