FIELD HOCKEY FINISH OPENING WEEKEND UNDEFEATED

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues field hockey team opened their 2009 season with a couple of wins and a tie on the September 19-20 weekend at Carleton University.

The Blues began their outdoor campaign with an impressive 6-0 win over the Carleton Ravens on Saturday, September 19 at Ravens Field. Emily Roy (Peterborough, Ont.) and Kristen Shier (North Vancouver, B.C.) led Toronto with two goals apiece. Kaelan Watson (Richmond, B.C.) and Rianna Sterk (Embro, Ont.) each added a goal in the victory.

Toronto’s second game of the day ended in a 1-1 tie with the Waterloo Warriors. The Varsity Blues had many opportunities throughout the game but could not convert their scoring chances into goals.

Kyesia O’Neale (Mississauga, Ont.) opened the scoring to give the Blues a 1-0 lead. That lead was short-lived as Jaimie Wey (Kitchener, Ont.) answered for the Warriors, jumping on a rebound and putting it away to even the game at 1-1.

Although the Blues had many circle penetrations and ball pressure on the Warriors, they could not find the back of the net and the game ended in a draw.

The Varsity Blues ended their opening weekend on a high note, defeating the Queens Gaels 6-0 on Sunday.

First-year players Natalie Provenzano (Richmond Hill, Ont.) and Britt Siu (West Vancouver, B.C.) picked up their first goal as Varsity Blue; Provenzano tallied two, while Siu added a single marker.

Watson, Hannah Tighe (Penticton, B.C.) and Angela Jennings (Ottawa, Ont.) notched one goal each to round out the scoring.

The Varsity Blues field hockey team will travel to the University of Western Ontario next Saturday, September 26, where they will take on the York Lions and OUA nemesis Guelph Gryphons. Game times are 11:45 a.m. and 6:45 p.m. respectively.
