The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s volleyball team came away with a 3-2 victory over the Queen’s Gaels on Friday, February 6 in Kingston, Ont.
After taking the first set 25-23, the Blues fell to a dominant Gaels squad 25-11 in the second game. Toronto would rally but again fell 25-22 and found themselves down two games to one heading into the fourth set.
A valiant rallying effort allowed the Blues to take the remaining sets 25-23, 15-11 and secure their 11th win of the season.
Heather Bansley (Waterdown, Ont.) had a game-high 19 kills and 21 digs, while Dianne Burrows (Richmond Hill, Ont.) added 10 kills. Kathleen Mahannah (North Vancouver, B.C.) tallied 36 assists and fourth-year libero Michelle Wood (Toronto) had 17 digs in the victory.
Natalie Gray (Oshawa, Ont.) and Lorna Button (Newcastle, Ont.) led the Gaels with 14 and 15 kills, respectively. Gray tallied a team-high 19 digs, with Button adding 16, while Louise Hamil (West Vancouver, B.C.) had seven kills and 17 digs in the loss.
Toronto needs a win tomorrow and the Gee-Gees to lose to the Brock Badgers in order to finish in second place and host an OUA quarter-final match. Any other scenario and women’s volleyball is on the road for their playoff game.
The Varsity Blues return to action tomorrow as they take on the RMC Paladins in Kingston, Ont. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
