BACK-TO-BACK OUA TITLES FOR MEN'S WATER POLO, DOWN RAVENS

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s water polo team capped off an undeafeated season and defended their OUA championship with a convincing 14-4 win over their rival Carleton Ravens on Sunday, November 29 at McMaster University's Ivor Wynne Centre Pool.

This afternoon’s final was rematch of last year’s championship contest, which the Blues won 7-6 at Carleton University in Ottawa. The win marks Toronto’s sixth provincial title since 2002 and their fifth in the last six years - the only blemish came in 2007 when the team failed to reach the championship’s finale.

The Blues men’s team went 10-0 in the regular season and were ranked number one heading into the weekend. They easily defeated the No. 4 York Lions in the first semifinal on Saturday by a score of 15-4.

The Ravens defeated the McMaster Marauders 8-7 in a tightly contested second semi-final match-up to set up today’s showdown.

First-year arts and science student Graeme Myers (Toronto), named a 2009 first-team OUA all-star last week, led the Blues with four goals in the gold-medal game. Second-year player Milos Radojcic from Belgrade, Serbia tallied three key goals as well.

In what was a truly outstanding team effort, the Varsity Blues had six other players get into the action and hit the back of the net: OUA second-team all-star Alan Chung (Ajax, Ont.) notched two, while Cagri Ilhan (Istanbul), Calum Kendrick (Ottawa), Paulo Ruiz (Kitchener, Ont.), Luke Spooner (Auckland) and Tuna Tali (Istanbul) each score one apiece.

Toronto goaltending was also recognized by the OUA this past week as both Trevor Robinson (Scarborough, Ont.) and Andrew Chorniy (Lviv, Ukraine) were named all-stars and proved they belonged on that list, allowing just eight goals over their two games this weekend.
