WOMEN’S SQUASH 1-1 AT OUA WEST SECTIONAL

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s squash team went 1-1 at the OUA West sectional on Saturday, November 21 at McMaster University.

The Blues defeated the host Marauders after a tiebreaker before falling 4-2 to the Western Mustangs in the second match of the day.

The Marauders took an early 3-0 lead in the opening match of the day, winning the number one, two and three matches. The Blues responded in a big way, taking the number four, five and six matches as Daniah Shamim (Oshawa, Ont.), Soojin Yi (Toronto) and Rebecca Tristan Aldave (San Luis Potosi, Mexico) tied things up for Toronto. With the game even at 3-3, U of T took the tiebreaker by a convincing 11-point margin for the win.

In the second match of the day, Megan Northey (Victoria, B.C.) and Cami Marmoush (Cairo, Egypt) in the number one and two positions, each took a game from their opponents before falling 3-1.

Aldave, playing in the number six spot, won her second match of the day 3-0, however number five Soojin Yi had a tougher battle with her opponent, losing the first game 15-13, however, battled back to win the third 11-9 before falling in the fourth.

The most competitive match of the day came in the number four match. Shamim completed an amazing comeback with an 11-9 victory in the fifth and final game to take the match 3-2 winning. Shamim remains unbeaten in three years of OUA matches.

The Varsity Blues return to the court December 4-6 as they travel to Clinton, New York for a set of exhibition games against the No. 15 Hamilton College and University of Rochester.

U of T will then host the OUA crossover, January 16-17, 2010 at the Athletic Centre Squash Courts.
