WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO RYERSON 73-64

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s basketball lost the first game of a home-and-home, 73-64, to the Ryerson Rams at Kerr Hall on opening night (Oct.30) of the 2009-10 OUA basketball season.

Despite outshooting the Rams, rebounding and defence were the keys on this night. Toronto had the upper hand in the first half, controlling the glass and out-rebounding Ryerson 17-15. The Rams took over in the second half, hauling in a total of 41 boards to the Blues 31.

Second-year forward Angela Tilk (Welland, Ont.) was a big reason for Ryerson's impressive numbers. Tilk grabbed a game-high 15 boards, 10 of which were offensive. Tilk also netted 14 points to complete the double-double.

Nikki Schutz (Toronto) led the way offensively for the Varsity Blues, pouring in a game-high 19 points and was just two rebounds shy of a double-double. Megan Stoncius (Mississauga, Ont.) had a strong game for Toronto with nine points and seven rebounds, while Emily Larson (Calgary, Alta.) also added nine in the loss.

Toronto shot 45.8 (27-59) percent from the floor and 57.1 (4-7) from three-point range compared to Ryerson’s 34.2 percent from the floor and 27.8 from beyond the arc. However, the Rams were in position to put up 73 field-goal attempts, including 36 three-pointers.

Ryerson’s adjustment to a full-court press rattled the Blues and turned the tide in the second half as the Blues turned the ball over nine more times then their opponent and generated six less steals. The Rams also got to the free-throw line 23 times to the Blues 10.

For the second consecutive year, the Blues lose their season opener to their city rivals but will get a chance to redeem themselves tomorrow night as they host the Rams at the Athletic Centre. A Halloween tip off is schedule for 6 p.m.
