BOYLE SIXTH AT FRANCOPHONE GAMES

Sarah Boyle of the University of Toronto Varsity Blues track and field team posted a sixth-place finish in the women’s high jump event at the 2009 Jeux de la Fracophonie (Francophone Games) on Friday, October 2 in Beirut, Lebanon.

Boyle (Scarborough, Ont.), the 2008-09 CIS high jump champion, cleared a height of 1.70m to place sixth on Friday morning. Sandrine Champion of France won the competition with a height of 1.84m, while Beatrice Lundmark of Switzerland was second, also jumping a height of 1.84m. Canadian Nicole Forrester earned the bronze medal with a height of 1.80m.

U of T alumna Kate Ruediger finished third in her 400m heat to qualify for tomorrow’s final. The race is scheduled for 2:15 p.m. (UTC/GMT), 7:15 a.m. (EST).

Highlighting the day was University of Toronto Track Club’s (UTTC) Massimo Bertocchi’s first-place finish in the men’s decathlon. A 2008 Olympian, Bertocchi had a personal best performance, finishing with 8053 points - 393 points ahead of second place Francois Gourmet of Belgium. Fellow Canadian, Jamie Adjetey-Nelson, won the bronzed with 7602 points.

Bertocchi finished first in the 110m hurdles (14.46), long jump (7.45m), pole vault (4.70m), shot put (14.31m) and discus events (47.08m) and second in the 100m (10.84), 400m (49.00) and high jump (1.99m). He also placed third in the javelin (52.78m) and fifth in the 1500m (4:43.74).
