Alan Chung, Tuna Tali, and Cargi IIhan were the high scorers for the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s water polo team, leading them to 20-3 and 19-8 victories against the Queen’s Gaels and the Carleton Ravens in their first two games of the regular season.
The defending OUA champions started off their season with an amazing victory against the Gaels. Tanner Regan (Surrey, B.C.) got the first in what turned out to be thirteen straight goals. It wasn’t until the third quarter that the Gaels managed to get one by the Blues goalkeeper.
Tali (Istanbul, Turkey) led the way for the Blues, coming away with five goals. Chung (Ajax, Ont.) and all-star Cargri Ilhan (Istanbul, Turkey) followed suit, notching four points apiece for Toronto.
The Gaels Bliss Man nabbed another two points in the final minutes of the fourth quarter, but the gap was too great and the Blues took the game 20-3.
In their second game of the new season, the Blues faced the Carleton Ravens, whom they edged in last year’s OUA championship final.
Luke Spooner (Aukland, Nz.), Milos Radojcic (Belgrade, Serbia), and Graeme Meyers (Toronto) led the way for the Blues, each scoring four goals.
Toronto started off strong and took command in the early minutes, scoring the first four goals of the game in the first quarter, two from Spooner, Team Ontario’s most valuable player in 2009. The Ravens broke through and scored midway through the quarter, however, the Blues went on notch three more to push their lead to 7-1.
The Blues were strong defensively throughout the second quarter and thwarted the Ravens attempts to score, leading by eight at halftime.
It wasn’t until the final quarter that the Ravens began to chip away and narrow the gap, however it was too little, too late as the Blues maintained control and would secure the victory.
The Blues get set to face their cross-town rival, the York Lions, on October 22nd at York University. Game time is scheduled for 8:45 p.m.
