WOMEN’S SQUASH COMPLETES UNDFEATED REGULAR SEASON

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s squash team defeated the McGill Martletts 4-2 and the Queen’s Gaels 6-0 this weekend (Jan. 17-18) at the Athletic Centre Squash Courts.

With the two wins, the Blues sit atop the standings with a perfect 4-0 record going into the OUA championship hosted by the Western Mustangs, February 13-14 in London, Ont.

The highlight of Saturday’s match versus the Martletts was Edith Chow’s (Thornhill, Ont.) domination of the number three match, 9-1, 9-0, 9-3. Cami Marmoush (Cairo, EGY), Shu Hsien Zhu (Toronto) and Soojin Yi (Oakville, Ont.) easily won their matches, dropping only six points between them. Toronto’s number one Karlene Headley-Cooper (Mississauga, Ont.) and number two Megan Northey (Victoria, B.C.) found their McGill counterparts difficult to handle and both fell 3-0.

On Sunday, the Blues swept the defending OUA champion Queen’s Gaels 6-0 without dropping a game. Headley-Cooper and Northey had reasonably competitive games, while Zhu, Daniah Shamim (Oshawa, Ont.), Ruchi Chawla (Oakville, Ont.) and Rebeca Tristan Aldave (San Luis Porosi, MEX) all won their matches very easily.

Toronto is the top seed going into the OUA championship weekend and will face Queen’s in the first semi-final match.

Before heading to the playoffs, the Varsity Blues will travel to Maine (Feb. 5-8) in hopes of keeping their unbeaten streak alive against Bates, Bowdoin, Colby and Northeastern Universities.
