The University of Toronto Varsity Blues soccer teams defeated the Trent Excalibur on Saturday, September 27 at Varsity Centre. The No. 8 Blues men recorded a 4-2 victory while the No. 8 women dominated with a 5-1 win.
In the first match of the day, the Varsity Blues men soccer team came out on fire, looking to avoid a repeat of last weekend’s 0-0 tie with Trent. It was Toronto forward Seung Bok Lee (Toronto, Ont.) who opened up the scoring when he headed a Geoffrey Borgman (Dixie, Ont.) pass over Trent goalkeeper Navi Sidhu (Peterborough, Ont.) in the 13th minute of the game.
11 minutes later, Borgman sent a booming shot towards Sidhu, who gave up a big rebound, and Lee was there to collect it and notch his second goal of the game.
Third-year striker Nordo Gooden (Kingston, JAM) tallied the Blues third goal of the game as he sent a deflected shot over the Excalibur defenders and into the net.
Thaddeus Bolton (Bowmanville, Ont.) got Trent got on the board in the 39th minute, catching Blues goalkeeper John Smits (Mississauga, Ont.) off guard and put his strike into the open net.
Toronto led 3-1 at the half.
Midway through the second half, Alex Raphael (Toronto, Ont.) scored on a penalty kick to increase the Blues lead to three. Bolton recorded his second of the game minutes later, however the Blues would prevail with a 4-2 victory.
In women’s action, Nav Deol (Mississauga, Ont.) started things off early for the Blues and headed a Jennifer Siu (London, Ont.) pass past Trent goalkeeper Melissa Waresa (Tecumseh, Ont.) in the eighth minute of the game.
Erica Basso (Richmond Hill, Ont.) notched the next two goals for the Blues while Briony DeMott (Victoria, B.C.) added one in the 44th minute of the game to put the Blues up 4-0 at the end of the first half.
Trent recorded what would be their only goal of the game in the 58th minute when Kali Fitzsimmons (Peterborough, Ont.) headed the ball past Blues goalkeeper Leslie Kennedy (Albert Bridge, NS) off a corner kick.
Basso recorded a hat trick, scoring her third goal of the game in the 85th minute, securing the Blues 5-1 victory.
