FIELD HOCKEY TIES GUELPH 2-2

Riana Sterk (Embro, Ont.) scored twice as the University of Toronto Varsity Blues rallied to tie the Guelph Gryphons 2-2 in OUA field hockey action on Saturday, September 27 at Varsity Centre.

In a rematch of last year’s OUA and CIS final, the defending CIS champions Varsity Blues started off strong, narrowly missing a scoring opportunity in the first minute of the game however, it was Guelph who got on board first when Jessica Jarrell (Guelph, Ont.) found a way past Blues goalie Alice Zhao (Delta, B.C.) to put the Gryphons up by one.

The Blues continued to press offensively but Gryphons defender Alison Little (Toronto, Ont.) notched the next goal of the game and Toronto was down 2-0 at the end of the first half.

Led by a core of veteran players, the Blues were able to regroup in the second half and display their stellar offensive talent. Fourth-year forward Rianna Sterk (Embro, Ont.) scored in the first two minutes of the final frame to pull Toronto to within one and get the team back in the game.

The rest of the half was a back-and-forth battle as both teams were vying for the next goal. Sterk came through for the Blues again as she scored with three minutes to go and the Blues and Gryphons came away with a point apiece.

Toronto remains undefeated in the OUA (4-0-1) and returns to Varsity Centre on Monday, September 29th to take on the York Lions at 5 p.m.
