The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s rugby team fell to the Queen’s Gaels 19-12 on Saturday, September 20 at Kingston field.
Gaels winger Jocelyn Poirier (Ottawa, Ont.) opened up the scoring in the 27th minute with kicker Emily Stern (Toronto, Ont.) converting, putting Queen’s up 7-0. The Blues answered back 10 minutes later when Rosie Lang (St. Agatha, Ont.) earned Toronto’s first try of the game, narrowing the lead to two at the half.
The Blues came out hungry in the second half and scored early on a Heather Seiling (Elmira, Ont.) try to give Toronto their first lead of the game. However, the Gaels would prevail, after Brehannah Hopgood (Wolfville, Ont.) scored five minutes later and Julie Englehardt (Gatineau, Que.) ran for a long try in the 28th minute of the second half to secure the 19-12 victory.
The Varsity Blues return home to host the Guelph Gryphons next Saturday, September 27 at 1 p.m. at the University of Toronto’s back campus field.
