BADGERS BREAK BLUES AT HOME

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s basketball team fell 84-65 to the visiting Brock Badgers on Friday, November 28 at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym. The game kicked off the Blues second annual Think Pink weekend in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

Toronto started off slow but was able rally and found themselves down 14-12 at the end of the first quarter. However, the Badgers furthered the gap in the second quarter and went into halftime with a comfortable 34-20 lead.

Toronto put forth a valiant effort and was able to close in on the Badgers, trailing by just five points (57-52) at the end of the third quarter. Badgers defence and Blues unforced errors proved to be the deciding factor in this game as Brock sped away, controlling the play and outscoring the Blues 27-13 in the final frame to come away with the 19-point victory.

Blues player of the game Tara Kinnear (Kemptville, Ont.) recorded a double-double, tallying 19 points and 15 rebounds. Hamilton, Ont. native Alaine Hutton added 15 points, while third-year guard Sherri Pierce (Brampton, Ont.) notched 14 points in the Toronto loss.

Whitney Gorges (Welland, Ont.) led all players with 24 points for the Badgers, while Britt Pegg (Weyburn, Sask.) and Lauren Stewart (Hamilton, Ont.) recorded 17 and 14 points, respectively, in the 84-64 Brock win.

The Varsity Blues host the Guelph Gryphons tomorrow night (Nov. 29) at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
