BLUES DOWN WARRIORS 69-68

Alaine Hutton (Hamilton, Ont.) had 26 points as the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s basketball team edged the Waterloo Warriors 69-68 on Saturday, November 22 at the PAC.

Toronto came out on fire, building a 14-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. Waterloo rallied to close the gap, outscoring Toronto 17-14 in the second quarter. The Blues held a narrow 28-25 lead at halftime.

Toronto again came out with energy in the third quarter and built a comfortable 51-42 lead going into the final frame. Fourth-year Warriors guard Kim Lee (Ajax, Ont.) rallied her squad, scoring 18 points in the fourth as Waterloo cut the Toronto lead to just one in the final minute of the game. However, Toronto managed to hold off any additional Waterloo pressure and came away with a nail-biting 69-68 victory.

Hutton added seven boards to her 26 points, while Tara Kinnear (Kemptville, Ont.) and Nicki Shutz (Toronto) each recorded double-doubles. Kinnear tallied 14 points and a game-high 15 boards with Shutz knocking down 16 points and hauling in 13 boards in the victory.

The Varsity Blues return home to host their second annual Think Pink game in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation on Friday, November 28th. The Blues host the Brock Badgerst at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
