In a thrilling championship final, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues defeated the Carleton University Ravens to capture the 2008 OUA men's water polo title. The Blues downed the defending champs 7-6 on Sunday, November 23 to claim their third banner in four years.
With the score tied at 1-1 early in the contest, Toronto netted three unanswered goals before the host Ravens scored at the buzzer to pull Carleton to within two goals at the intermission.
Both teams had numerous opportunities to break the game open, however, a strong defensive battle throughout most of the game and great goaltending at both ends kept things close in the low-scoring affair.
Carleton controlled most of the third quarter tying the match at four just three minutes in. The Blues scored late in the frame to regain the lead they would not relinquish, outscoring their opponents 2-1 in the final stanza to hold and reclaim the provincial title.
Varsity Blues player of the game Andrew Chorniy (Lviv, UKR) made numerous saves on Ravens shooters to keep his team in the lead for the majority of the afternoon.
Ryan Speers (Cambridge, Ont.) and Milos Radojcic (Toronto) each score twice, while Ryan Pallet (Ancaster, Ont.), and Surrey B.C. natives Carston Ruffo and Tanner Regan all added one goal in the victory.
The Ravens were led by Sasa Stevanovic (Gatineau, Que.) with two goals, his brother Milan, Gordon Cameron (Ottawa), Dejan Suletic (Gatineau, Que.) and Stefan Pavicevic, (Ottawa) all added single tallies in the loss.
