The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s basketball team suffered two losses on the road this weekend (Nov. 14-15), falling 87-55 to the Windsor Lancers on Friday night and a 72-55 loss to the Western Mustangs on Saturday afternoon.
The Lancers dominated offensively on Friday, building a 47-29 lead at the midway point of the game. The rest of the game saw much of the same, as the Blues were limited to only 13 points in each of the third and fourth quarters.
First-year transfer student Nicki Shutz (Toronto) led all players with 21 points, while Alaine Hutton (Hamilton, Ont.) notched 13 points in the loss.
The Blues came out strong on Saturday afternoon and only trailed 34-31 at halftime. However, Western pulled ahead in the third quarter, outscoring Toronto 22-13 and continued to hold off the Blues offence to come away with the 72-55 victory.
Shutz recorded a double-double, scoring 15 points and adding 16 boards. Hutton notched 16 points for the Blues, while fourth-year veteran Jessica Hiew (Canberra, AUS) tallied 11 points in the loss.
The Varsity Blues are on the road again next weekend, as they travel to face the Laurier Golden Hawks on Friday, November 21st and the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday, November 22nd. Game time on both days is scheduled for 6 p.m.
