The Varsity Blues field hockey team advances to the OUA championship game with an impressive 4-0 win over the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday, Oct.25 at Varsity Centre.
Four different players accounted for the Blues scoring: third-year forward Kyesia O’Neale, veterans Kri Sheir and Shannon Treacy, and the Blues regular season leading scorer Rianna Sterk each tallied goals in the contest.
With the win, Toronto advances to the OUA championship final on Sunday, Oct. 26 and earns a berth in the 2008 CIS championship in Victoria B.C., Oct. 31-Nov. 2.
The Blues attacked the Warriors defence early in this contest, scoring in the fifth minute of the game when Oakville native Cailie O’Hara ripped a shot from just inside the top of the circle that was tipped by teammate Kyesia O’Neale (Mississauga, Ont.) to put Toronto up 1-0.
O’Hara, the 2008 OUA MVP, continued to lead the Toronto charge, setting up fellow teammate and first team all-star Kri Shier (North Vancouver, B.C) with a nice drop pass after a short corner.
Fifth-year veteran Shannon Treacy followed the Shier goal with a rocket of her own. Treacy let a blast go from the left side of the circle that caught the inside of the far goal post and gave Toronto a 3-0 before the end of the first half.
Waterloo never really established an offensive presence until later in the second half when, with under six minutes left to play in the game, they challenged Blues goalkeeper Alice Zhao (Delta, B.C.) with a couple of close-range shots. However, Zhao maintained her positioning and did not allow a shot past her, preserving the shut out.
Toronto put the game out of reach shortly there after and tallied their fourth goal of the game. OUA second team all-star Rianna Sterk (Embro, Ont.) notched her first goal of the OUA championship, capitalizing on a loose ball after a Blues free hit just outside of the Warriors circle.
