BLUES FINISH REGULAR SEASON UNDEFEATED

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s field hockey team finished their 2008 OUA regular season campaign with three big wins this weekend (Oct. 17-19). The Blues downed the McGill Martletts 5-0 on Friday night, defeated the Carleton Ravens 5-1 on Saturday and came away with another 5-1 win over the Queen’s Gaels on Sunday.

With the three victories this weekend, the Blues finish atop the OUA standings with an undefeated record of 12-0-2 and are ranked first as they host the OUA championship October 24-26 at Varsity Centre.

Rianna Sterk (Embro, Ont.) increased her scoring streak to four games, with two goals for the Blues against the Martletts on Friday night and one versus the Ravens on Saturday. Sterk leads the Blues with 12 goals this season.

The Blues dominated the Martletts on Friday night, coming away with a 5-0 victory. Sterk potted two goals, while fifth-year OISE student Shannon Treacy (Burlington, Ont.), Mississauga native Kyesia O’Neale and second-year forward Hannah Tighe (Penticton, B.C.) tallied one apiece.

Toronto continued their stellar play on Saturday, defeating the Carleton Ravens 5-1. Five different players scored for the Blues with goals from fifth-year veterans Cailie O’Hara (Oakville, Ont.) and Treacy and fourth-year standouts Kristin Shier (North Vancouver, B.C.) and Sterk. Tighe added her second of the weekend to round out the Toronto scoring.

The Blues recorded another 5-1 win on Sunday in their last regular season game against the Queen’s Gaels. O’Hara led the Blues with two goals while teammates Shier, Tighe and Watson added one apiece in the victory.

The Varsity Blues host the 2008 OUA championship starting next Saturday, October 24 at Varsity Centre.
