WATER POLO MAKES A SPLASH IN VARSITY POOL

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s and women’s water polo teams won their respective home openers in convincing fashion on Saturday, October 18th at Varsity Pool.

The undefeated men’s team clobbered the University of Western Ontario Mustangs 29-4 in their home debut, while the women downed the McMaster Marauders 17-9. The men also defeated the counterparts from McMaster, 12-4, in their second game of the day.

All but two Blues men’s players scored in the first offensive assault. The team was led by veterans Max Pottier (Kitchener, Ont.) with five goals, Carston Ruffo (Surrey, B.C.), Tanner Regan, and Barbados born Alan Warner each netted four.

The undefeated Blues did not allow a goal against until the second half and limited their opponent to four, their lowest goals-against total this season. Their 29 goals for is their highest offensive output in five regular season games.

Regan remained the hot hand in the Blues second of two games on Saturday. The Surrey, B.C. native tallied five goals, while Ryan Speers (Cambridge, Ont.) notched three and Ruffo added two. Cagri Ilhan (Istanbul, TUR) and Andrew Chorniy (Lviv, UKR) also scored one goal each in the 12-4 win.

2007-08 OUA first-team all-star Nicole Brown (Burlington, Ont.) led the women’s water polo team, scoring seven of the team’s 17 goals, while rookie Casey Pottier (Kitchener, Ont.) tallied five in the Blues win.

Amanda Gordon (Stoney Creek, Ont.), Regan Reid (Kitchener), Laura Shaw (Coquitlam, B.C.) and Brittany Sinclair (Scarborough, Ont.) rounded out the scoring, notching a goal apiece.

The Blues are 3-1 to start the 2008 water polo campaign, sitting atop the OUA standings.
