BLUES DOWN GAELS 2-0

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues No. 6 men’s soccer team came away with a 2-0 victory over the Queen’s Gaels on Friday, October 10 at Varsity Centre.

Both teams came out hungry in the first half, however it was Alex Raphael (Toronto, Ont.) who sparked the Blues offence, recording numerous shots on net. First-year standout Dylan Bams (Fanny Bay, B.C.) opened up the scoring as he capitalized on a poor defensive clearance and fired a rocket past Gaels goalkeeper Tyler Lewis (Maple Ridge, B.C.) in the 23rd minute of the match.

Midfielder Jordan Brooks (Angus, Ont.) and Thunder Bay native Andrew Colosimo attempted to rally the Queen’s squad, but the stellar defensive play of Yannis Gianniotis (Toronto, Ont.) shut them down.

The Blues led 1-0 at the half.

First-year Toronto forward Niko Pesa (Burlington, Ont.) would add an insurance goal in the 56th minute, sending the ball into the far corner of the net to secure the 2-0 victory.

Blues veteran goalkeeper Luciano Lombardi (Scarborough, Ont.) earned the shut out in his first game back from injury.

The Varsity Blues travel to Kingston to take on the RMC Paladins on Saturday, October 18 and the Queen’s Gaels on Sunday, October 19 in their last two 2008 regular season matches. The games are scheduled for 1 p.m. on both days.
