Fifth-year veteran Joe Rand accumulated three goals and five assists to lead the Varsity Blues men’s hockey team to crucial road victories over the divisional rival Queen’s Gaels and Nipissing Lakers this weekend.

A native of Hamilton, Ont., Rand kicked off the Blues first game of 2010 with a bang, scoring two goals in the first 2:30 against Queen’s on Friday night. The 6-foot-3, 215lbs forward went on to assist Byron Elliott’s game-winning goal, as well as Toronto’s sixth goal in the convincing 7-3 victory.

Rand did not stop there – the arts and science major set up team captain Brendan Sherrard for the opening goal in a 6-4 win over the Nipissing Lakers on Saturday night. He then assisted both the tying and winning goals before adding an insurance marker of his own.

Plagued by an injury in the first half of 2009-10, Rand has quickly established himself as a scoring threat in the OUA, recording 12 points in just six games played this season.

Honourable Mention: Cam Cummings (M-Swimming): Won five gold medals over two dual meets this weekend…broke the meet record in the 50m backstroke against the McMaster Marauders on Sunday.
