The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's lacrosse team defeated the McMaster Marauders 15-13 on Saturday (Sept. 26) night in Hamilton.
The win marked the first of the CUFLA season for U of T, and also the first for new head coach Jonathan Leclerc.
Despite trailing 6-4 at the end of the first quarter, the Blues were able to bounce back drawing even at the half. An explosive third quarter then gave Toronto the edge it needed to secure the road win.
Fourth-year midfield Graham Dicken proved to be essential to the Blues attack, registering a game-high four goals along with an assist. Both fifth-year midfield Justin Ranger and fourth-year attack Daniel Clarke recorded hat-tricks, while first-year attack Ethan Bahniuk had two goals in the win. Scoring was rounded out by Alexander May, Liam Koach, and Kevin Yan with single markers. Fourth-year goalie Benjamin Rishikof made nine saves to secure the win.
Toronto remains on the road, next heading to St. Catharines to challenge the Brock Badgers. Scheduled to take place on Wednesday, Sept. 30, there will be a special pre-game ceremony in honour of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Official start time for the game is set at 7 p.m.
