The University of Toronto Varsity Blues swimming team featured four current student-athletes and one alumna, representing three different countries, all competing at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland over the past week.

Highlighting the Varsity Blues in the water was alumna Kylie Masse. The five-time Olympic medalist added her name to the Canadian national record books, becoming the most decorated Canadian swimmer at the Commonwealth Games. Adding gold in the 50m backstroke and silver in the 100m backstroke, Masse brought her career total to 11 Commonwealth Games medals to make her the most successful Canadian swimmer in Commonwealth history. She would also add a fourth-place finish alongside her teammates in the 4x100m mixed medley relay to round out her run at the 2026 edition of the international showcase.

"I don't think I entirely understand (the role model that I am) but it's moments like this that put it at the forefront of my brain," said Masse after her gold medal victory. "I did notice those kids singing (the anthem). To notice they are watching, not just me, but everybody competing here tonight hopefully inspires them to get in sport and believe in the unity of sport. It was incredible to see and I was appreciative."

Also competing with Team Canada but for the first time, both Ben Loewen and Ben Winterborn reached numerous A-Finals. For Loewen, the Varsity Blues veteran picked up a sixth-place finish in the 200m butterfly and 200m backstroke. Meanwhile, Winterborn was part of Canada's fourth-place finish in the men's 4x100m medley relay and fifth-place finish in the men's 4x100m freestyle relay. He also competed in the 50m, 100m, and 200m backstroke events.

Another Varsity Blues in Glasgow, Elijah Daley competed at his first Commonwealth Games under the flag of Bermuda. Daley placed second in his heat and 19^th overall in the 100m butterfly, while also earning a 14^th-place finish in the 200m IM.

Serving as flagbearer for the Cayman Islands during opening ceremonies, Varsity Blues distant freestyle specialist Connor Macdonald also attended his first Commonwealth Games. The distance freestyle specialist swam in four individual events for his home country racing in the 200m, 400m, 800m, and 1500m freestyle. He additionally took part in both the 4x100m medley relay and alongside his teammates shattered the Cayman Islands national record for the 4x100m freestyle relay.

"It was an honor to represent my home nation of the Cayman Islands at one of the world's most prestigious games," said Macdonald. "It was an experience I will never forget and to compete alongside my U of T teammates made it even more special."
