As announced by the International Swimming League (ISL) this past weekend, University of Toronto Varsity Blues swimming head coach Byron MacDonald was announced as one of four coaches of Team Commonwealth for the upcoming ISL All-Star Match in December.
Scheduled to take place on Saturday, Dec. 19 at the London Aquatics Centre in London, England, the match will feature four regional teams pitting Team Commonwealth against the USA, Europe, and Team World. It also marks the first ISL match since the cancellation of the 2022 season. Prior to that, MacDonald served as a coach with the ISL's Toronto Titans.
"This is a big honour to be involved in this pioneering effort to continue to professionalize the sport of swimming," said MacDonald. "I'm glad to be representing Canada and the University of Toronto on this very special stage."
MacDonald is joined by Dean Boxall (Australia), Ben Higson (Great Britain), and Rocco Meiring (South Africa) as the leadership group for Team Commonwealth. Team Commonwealth will feature swimmers from Canada, Australia, Great Britain, and South Africa.
Currently in his 49
th season leading the Varsity Blues swimming program, MacDonald has spent plenty of time coaching at the international level as well. This has included serving as a primary coach with five-time Olympic medalist Kylie Masse. He has also served as head coach for Team Canada at both FISU and Pan-Pacific Championships. MacDonald was inducted into the Canadian Swim Coaches Hall of Fame in 2023.
