LEGENDARY BUILDERS HIGHLIGHT THE 2026 U OF T SPORTS HALL OF FAME CLASS

A distinguished group of Varsity Blues builders and student-athletes will become the newest members of the University of Toronto Sports Hall of Fame as part of the 2026 induction class.

The 2026 ceremony will take place on Thursday, June 4 at the Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport, with a reception beginning at 6 p.m., and the induction ceremony to follow at 7 p.m. Register here for the ceremony.

The 2026 class recognizes three transformative builders and five exceptional athletes whose contributions have shaped the legacy of Varsity Blues athletics through championship success, national leadership and lasting impact on the student-athlete experience.

Three visionary builders joining the Hall are long-serving athletics leader Beth Ali, sports information pioneer Paul Carson and championship men's basketball coach Ken Olynyk.

In the athlete category, field hockey standouts Deb Cuthbert and Malinda Hapuarachchi will be inducted, as well as basketball stars Jason Dressler, Lars Dressler and Sherwyn Benn.

Beth Ali
Beth Ali, Builder
A visionary leader in interuniversity sport, Ali dedicated more than 30 years to the Faculty of Kinesiology & Physical Education, including eight as executive director of athletics and physical activity. In leading the largest varsity program in North America, she expanded facilities, strengthened academic and wellness supports, and positioned Varsity Blues athletics as a national leader across Ontario University Athletics and U SPORTS.
 
Paul Carson
Paul Carson, Builder
One of the most respected figures in Canadian university sport communications, Carson has served the University of Toronto for more than six decades. As sports information director and later executive assistant to the dean, he supported more than 100 OUA championships and 27 national championships hosted by U of T, while mentoring generations of communications professionals across Canada.
 
Ken Olynyk
Ken Olynyk, Builder
Head coach of Varsity Blues men's basketball from 1989 to 2002, Olynyk guided Toronto to four national championship appearances and captured the 1994-95 OUA Wilson Cup. A national coach of the year, he built a culture of excellence that established the program as a consistent contender.

Deb Cuthbert
Deb Cuthbert (Field Hockey)
One of the most decorated players in program history, Cuthbert led the Blues to four OUA championships and a CIAU national gold medal in 1996. A four-time All-Canadian and 1998 CIAU Most Valuable Player, she represented Canada internationally and remains one of the most dominant athletes ever to wear the Blue and White.
 
Malinda H
Malinda Hapuarachchi (Field Hockey)
A CIS Gail Wilson Award recipient and two-time All-Canadian, Hapuarachchi powered the Blues to three consecutive OUA titles and multiple national medals. She represented Canada internationally and later returned to U of T as a coach, helping guide the program to six additional OUA championships.
 
Jason Dressler
Jason Dressler (Basketball)
A three-time OUA all-star, Jason Dressler ranks among the program's career leaders in field goal percentage and rebounds. He was instrumental in the Blues 1994-95 Wilson Cup championship season and three national championship appearances before playing professionally in Germany.
 
Lars Dressler
Lars Dressler (Basketball)
A key contributor during a golden era of Varsity Blues men's basketball, Lars Dressler helped Toronto capture the 1994-95 OUA Wilson Cup and reach three national championship appearances before continuing his career professionally in Germany.
 
Sherwyn Benn
Sherwyn Benn (Basketball)
A four-year captain and steady point guard, Benn helped lead Toronto to the 1996-97 CIAU national quarter-finals and set the program's single-season steals record. A Level III certified coach, he continues to shape the game as a mentor and leader in the basketball community.
