BLUES HONOUR EIGHT INDUCTEES AT 2026 U OF T SPORTS HALL OF FAME CEREMONY

The University of Toronto celebrated the achievements and lasting legacies of eight exceptional members of the Varsity Blues community on Thursday evening (June 4) during the 36th annual U of T Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony at Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport.

The Class of 2026 included builders Beth Ali, Paul Carson and Ken Olynyk, along with former student-athletes Sherwyn Benn (basketball), Deb Cuthbert (field hockey), Jason Dressler (basketball), Lars Dressler (basketball) and Malinda Hapuarachchi (field hockey).

Hosted by Olympian and T-Holders' Association president Jen Button, the evening brought together family members, friends, teammates, coaches, alumni and supporters to celebrate the accomplishments of individuals whose impact helped shape Varsity Blues athletics both on and off the field of play.

Faculty of Kinesiology & Physical Education Dean Gretchen Kerr welcomed guests and reflected on the importance of preserving and celebrating the university's rich athletic history.

"Hall of Fame celebrations like tonight are important because they preserve and celebrate the legacy of Varsity Blues athletics," said Safiya Muharuma, speaking on behalf of the Hall of Fame Selection Committee. "They remind us of the extraordinary individuals who helped shape this program and the lasting impact varsity sport can have - not only through athletic achievement, but through leadership, mentorship and community."

Current Varsity Blues women's soccer captain Hannah Chown also addressed the audience, sharing reflections on her own student-athlete experience and the inspiration provided by those who came before her.

The evening's inductees represented decades of excellence across varsity athletics, coaching, administration and sport leadership.

Ali, who served the Faculty of Kinesiology & Physical Education for more than 30 years, was recognized for her transformational leadership as Executive Director of Athletics and Physical Activity and Director of Intercollegiate and High Performance Sport. During her tenure, Varsity Blues student-athletes achieved remarkable success both academically and athletically while the program expanded facilities, support services and national prominence.

"I felt strongly that with the right structure and support, the athletic reputation at the University of Toronto could match its academic reputation," said Ali. "I was the enthusiastic orchestra conductor, but one is only as good as the musicians, the concert hall and all the people who make every performance happen."

Carson was honoured for more than six decades of service to Varsity Blues athletics and university sport. A pioneer in Canadian sports communications, Carson helped establish national standards within the profession while supporting countless student-athletes, coaches and championships throughout his distinguished career.

"Gatherings such as tonight are essential for the Varsity Blues to continue to celebrate the past and enhance our collective vision for the future," said Carson. "The Varsity Blues have numerous accomplishments in intercollegiate and international sport, but these programs also enrich the diversity of opportunities offered by the faculty and contribute much to the U of T experience beyond the academic world of lectures, labs and libraries."

Olynyk was recognized for his 13 seasons as head coach of the Varsity Blues men's basketball team, highlighted by the program's 1994-95 OUA Wilson Cup championship and his selection as both OUA and national coach of the year.

"Relationships - that's what it's about," said Olynyk. "One of the things people don't think about is the learnings that I received from each and every one of you that I was associated with."

Among the athlete inductees, Cuthbert was celebrated as one of the most decorated field hockey players in program history. A four-time All-Canadian and 1998 CIAU Most Valuable Player, she helped lead the Blues to four OUA championships and a national title while representing Canada internationally.

"For me, the Varsity Blues embodied all the qualities of a family: emotional connection, mutual support, shared identity and shared responsibility," said Cuthbert.

Hapuarachchi was honoured for her outstanding contributions to Varsity Blues field hockey as both a student-athlete and coach. The 2006 CIS Gail Wilson Award recipient helped lead Toronto to multiple conference championships before later returning to the program as a coach, contributing to six more OUA titles and five national medals.

"The incredible thing about sport is the community that you build, the shared experiences of the ups and downs of sport and the everlasting relationships," said Hapuarachchi. "Being a part of this program helped define who I am as a person and has defined my community. I am forever grateful."

The evening also celebrated the accomplishments of men's basketball standouts Jason and Lars Dressler and longtime team captain Sherwyn Benn, each of whom played significant roles during successful eras of Varsity Blues basketball while continuing to contribute to the sport beyond their playing careers.

As part of the ceremony, each inductee received a Hall of Fame certificate and commemorative Varsity Blues cardigan after sharing personal reflections and memories from their time at the University of Toronto.

The Sports Hall of Fame is administered by the Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education with the assistance of the T-Holders' Association. It was established in 1987 as part of an ongoing effort to record and celebrate a legacy of athletic excellence at U of T.

The permanent Hall of Fame display is located in the A. Gordon Stollery Atrium of the Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport, located at 100 Devonshire Place. It was launched as a digital, interactive display in 2014 to honour all Hall of Fame inductees. View the online Sports Hall of Fame at halloffame.utoronto.ca.
