The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's basketball team fell 82-66 versus the No. 4 nationally ranked TMU Bold on Wednesday (Feb 11) evening at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
Though evenly matched in the first quarter, the Blues were unable to control the basketball with 11 turnovers compared to TMU's five. The Bold had a strong presence in the paint, notching 24 points in the paint in the first half.
11 different Varsity Blues scored during tonight's match-up. Though struggling to protect the paint in the first half, Toronto finished strong and nearly matched TMU's points in the paint at 32-36. Despite a hefty deficit going into the fourth quarter, Toronto continued to put pressure on the Bold and outscored them 20-15. First-year guard Mikey Ballout poured in nine straight points in the fourth, with the Blues bench adding an additional seven of their 17 total bench points.
Ballout led Toronto with a game-high 17 points, six rebounds, and two steals. Fourth-year centre Nigel Hylton notched 10 points and four rebounds, with second-year guard Rohan Scott-Smith adding 11 points and two assists.
TMU was led by Aaron Rhooms matching the game-high of 17 points and seven rebounds, while shooting 64 percent from the field. Kevin Toth added 12 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists.
