The No. 6 University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's soccer team closed out their regular season schedule with a trip to the nation's capital on Sunday (Oct. 18), falling by a final score of 3-1 versus the No. 3 nationally ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees.
Toronto carried the early momentum in the Sunday afternoon showdown thanks to a missile of a shot from third-year forward Beatrice Audain. The marker came in just the eighth minute of the game and was Audain's second goal of the season.
Ottawa looked to switch the field, sending lots of pressure on the Toronto goal after falling behind early. Fourth-year goalkeeper Maria Godoy-Atrash was up to the task making a diving save on a tough volley and showing quick hands on a shot from in tight. The Varsity Blues veteran would finish the contest with eight total saves.
However, the constant pressure couldn't be held off forever as the No. 1 ranked offence in the province finally broke through with the Gee-Gees scoring an equalizer just past the 20 minute mark. Ottawa would not slow down though as they added two more first half goals. The Blues would notch seven second half shots as they attempted to close the gap, but they would be unable to find the back of the Ottawa net.
With the loss, U of T concludes the regular season with an 8-3-1 (W-L-T) record placing them into third place in the OUA East following tiebreakers.
The Blues will now host a first round OUA playoff contest at Varsity Stadium this coming Wednesday, Oct. 21. As time and opponent are confirmed, tickets will be available on
