FOUR-PEAT COMPLETE: WOMEN’S TENNIS WINS OUA BANNER

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's tennis successfully defended their provincial title, defeating the Queen's Gaels 4-3 in thrilling fashion in the OUA championship final on Sunday, October 11 at Mayfair East.

The banner marks Toronto's fourth straight, sixth in the last seven seasons and 43rd overall since 1927. The Blues complete a perfect season after going 7-0 in regular season action and 3-0 at the OUA championships this weekend.

Toronto earned the lone doubles point as Anastasiya Dyadchenko and Maria Popova took the No. 1 match, 8-3, and Cameron Yeung and Veronika Podobed won the No. 2 match, 8-5.

The Gaels stormed back however. Queen's tied the overall team score with a win in the No. 6 singles match and then took a 2-1 lead with a victory in the No. 5 spot. The Gaels looked to have the momentum after a win in the No. 2 singles match, leading 3-1.

Down, but not out, the Blues rallied. Maria Popova cut the deficit to 3-2 with a win in the No. 3 singles match and Dyadchenko evened the score at 3-3 with a thrilling three-set win in the No. 1 spot. Then, Katherine Zhang secured the overall team victory for the Blues, winning  the No. 4 singles match 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 in front of an energized crowd on the court.

Following the championship, Dyadchenko and Popova were both named OUA all-stars.
