Game Recap: Field Hockey |

BLUES BLANK MUSTANGS TO BEGIN HOMESTAND

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues field hockey team began their three-game homestand with a 5-0 win over the Western Mustangs on Sunday (Oct. 11) afternoon at Back Campus Fields.

U of T wasted no time breaking the ice. In the eighth minute, second-year forward Allie Lavis crashed the net and snuck the ball past Mustangs goalkeeper Mackenzie Gladman as the Blue and White got an early advantage. In the 18th minute, the Blues would double their lead courtesy of fourth-year forward Ava Airnes. The Aberdeen, Scotland native ripped a shot top-shelf as U of T was in the driver's seat. First-year midfielder Maddy Kim would add an insurance marker for the Blues in the 26th minute as U of T took a 3-0 lead into halftime.

Keeping their foot on the gas pedal in the second half, fourth-year midfielder Lauren Cardwell would make it a 4-0 game with a goal off of a penalty corner in the 51st minute. Rounding out the score for U of T was third-year defender Jada Mendonca would fire a shot past Gladman from the top off the D to tie a bow on a class performance by the Blue and White.

In goal, Mary Yang and Megan Kirkpatrick split duties in a clean sheet victory.

U of T will now turn their focus to the Queen's Gaels on Saturday (Oct. 17) afternoon at Back Campus Fields. The match with crucial playoff positioning on the line is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
