TORONTO SWEEPS WEEKEND IN PETERBOROUGH

The No. 8 nationally ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues traveled to the Trent Athletics Centre in Peterborough on Saturday (Jan. 10) to face off against the Trent Excalibur, earning a second straight three set sweep to claim a fourth straight victory.

Set scores in the match were 25-20, 25-23, 27-25.

After convincing win in the first two sets, the Blues faced a daunting challenge in the third set, trailing by seven points at 14-21. However, a significant momentum shift allowed them to stave off set points and complete a late comeback to win 27-25. As a collective, the team showcased a tremendous offensive gameplan with six different players registering a kill and 32 kills overall.

Several individuals stood out for the Blues during the contest. Fifth-year outside hitter Hunter Arulpragasam led the team in several categories, recording a game-high 12 kills to go along with one service ace and two solo blocks for 15 total points. Arulpragasam also delivered defensively with a game-high 11 digs, lifting his weekend totals to 34 total points and 18 total digs across the two matches in Peterborough.

For the Excalibur, Charlie Winser topped the home-side with 11 points from eight kills and three service aces, while also notching a team-high seven digs.

With this 3-0 victory, the nationally ranked Varsity Blues improve their season record to an impressive 9-1, sitting alone in second place in the OUA standings. Toronto will look to home court advantage to keep the momentum rolling as they begin a four match homestand first welcoming the TMU Bold to Goldring Centre on Friday, Jan. 16.
